I have personal ideological views on open source vs closed source, but at the end of the day I'm a pragmatist. There are cases where open source is superior (I'm typing in Firefox now) but in general I find open source software is driven by techies and is far too technically focussed, especially in the ecommerce space.

I worked with a client about a year ago on purchasing some enterprise CMS software, we had a good budget (well into 6 digits) and so got a pitch from several large vendors, includng some who were open source - giving away the software, but selling the services. The open source software was by far the most expensive. While that's one anecdote, I've found that to be generally (not always) true.
