Moving your address book and your Dymo to the Mac

Filed under: Tools — thatsoftwareguy @ 1:21 pm

Well, I think I just cut the last chain that bound me to Windows.

I used this tip to move my address book from Outlook to Mac Address Book.

And of course, since I wanted to use my Dymo 400, I downloaded the Dymo Drivers for Mac, which worked like a champ as soon as I figured out that you must use their application to print; you can’t print directly from Address Book.

I still have Quicken and QuickBooks running on Vista, but for the most part, I’m happy to say that I am now mostly Mac/Linux based. :)

sandy.gifI wrote a few weeks ago about how much I enjoyed using the electronic assistant Sandy. You can also use the delayed reminder feature of Sandy to remind you to follow up with your Zen Cart customers a few days after a sale. Just use my SMS on Sale mod; instructions are provided.

Basics of building an online business

Filed under: Business — thatsoftwareguy @ 6:38 am

A great article from Entrepreneur Magazine. Number one is in exactly the right place:

Step 1: Find a need and fill it.

In other words, don’t open yet another candle shop! I see way too many me-too businesses. Unless you’re really bringing something distinctive to the table, don’t go down the road well-traveled.

Mark Hinkle, writing in SocializedSoftware.com, said

When I go to a page that is Flash, I often find myself reaching for the back button…

Amen and amen. Are you listening, web developers???

Mark also gives a nice excerpt from the Zoho.com blog about the Ajax vs. Flash question.

Cheer up -  it could be worse.  You could be the RIAA.

Revenue neutral flat tax proposal

Filed under: Economics — thatsoftwareguy @ 7:06 am

Greg Mankiw thought enough of this flat tax analysis to give it some link love.    Money quote:

For 2005, I come up with a tax rate of 31.85% and a deduction of $35,725.

32%, eh?  Somehow I doubt Steve Forbes would be pleased.

Do you provide enough information for your buyers?

Here’s a lesson in what not to do from clickz.com:

When looking for shoes to buy her daughter, [she] measured the toddler’s foot and then looked for the site’s size chart. None existed. She wrote to the retailer asking them for a size chart, but was directed to go to a nearby store. “Not only did they not address my question, they directed me to the channel I tried to avoid shopping in the first place,” she said.

Simply amazing. “Just go to one of our competitors – they’ll be happy to help you!”
