Interesting Project Management tip

Filed under: Project Management — thatsoftwareguy @ 4:52 pm

I was at a talk last week in which the speaker insisted that the biggest error a project manager could make was tracking percent complete. “Don’t track percent complete – track estimate to completion” was his advice. Interesting! Arguably this forces more rigorous thinking about what really has to be done to put the project to bed.

Dymo printing Zen Cart “ship to” labels in Firefox

Filed under: That Software Guy,Zen Cart — thatsoftwareguy @ 1:17 pm

When I wrote the Dymo Label Printing for Zen Cart contribution I said I’d add support for Firefox when time allowed.  Well, I finally got to it last week.  If you’re a Dymo Labelwriter owner, check it out.  And if you aren’t, buy one!  It’s not for nothing that the saying “Dymo saves you time-o” has been passed from generation to generation.

The facts of life for new marketers

Filed under: Marketing — thatsoftwareguy @ 7:12 am

Take a look at what Ian Lure is saying in Conversation Marketing.  Although it was written for people in the ad game, most of these points apply to a wide range of small e-businesses.  My personal favorite was

Yes, you are worth whatever you charge! Probably more.

The links in the article were fun too.  My favorite was his retrospective on David Ogilvy.

Blast from the Past

Filed under: Business — thatsoftwareguy @ 6:31 am

Here’s Clifford Stohl explaining why e-commerce will never work back in 1995:

Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obsolete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople.

Yes, what could be better than a salesperson hovering over you anxiously awaiting their commission. :)

The Golden Rules of Twitter

Tweet unto others as you would have others tweet unto you.

It is more blessed to follow than to be followed.

These are my rules and I’m sticking to them. The motivation for number two was this article by the irrepressible Robert Scoble.
