overpromise, overdeliver…would be closer in meaning to Seth Godin’s definition.
If you underpromise then you probably won’t get the opportunity to overdeliver.

I have to agree with Jack here… One of the points Seth made was, and I quote, “And sometimes, they make promises that are too small to get our attention. Boring promises are hardly worth making”
Underpromising is pretty pointless and your would-be clients will find someone who’s promises are more exciting than yours..
