Filed under: Email — thatsoftwareguy @ 4:53 am

MarketingSherpa’s 2008 Email Awards Gallery provides a glimpse into the stylish emails top companies are sending as part of their promotions.  I was surprised by some of them, such as the Dell followup-up after cart abandonment email.

Building your mailing list

Filed under: Email — thatsoftwareguy @ 5:14 am

The folks over at Internet Wonders E-Zine have some good suggestions about building your email list. I like all the suggestions but my favorite is the second (set up a promotion or freebie) – if you offer a value proposition rather than just another stream of marketing material, people will be more keen to give you their email addresses.

Newsletters: What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?

Filed under: Email — thatsoftwareguy @ 7:07 am

Don’t you hate those vendors who just hammer you with newsletter after newsletter when each one is just the same sales pitch with no added value?

By contrast, I get newsletters every week from Borders.com and I almost always open them.

Borders Email

So what’s the difference between the ones that get read and the ones that don’t?The ones from Borders always have interesting coupons. And they’re not always the same – so I’m curious to see what this one is. There’s a lesson in here if you’re sending a newsletter to your clients. :)

Transactional Email: Marketing Opportunity?

Elaine’s suggestion is great.  I think I’ll add this as a switchable option to my cross-selling software.

Click or Tweet?

TwitterRobert Scoble swears off email and pledges allegiance to Twitter and Facebook.  In response, Dan Harrelson of Adaptive Path calls him a tool.   Now “tool” might be a bit harsh, but I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would give up email. I’m not opposed to Scoble’s suggestion that responding less frequently will reduce your email load, but I don’t think the average business can thrive by ignoring email altogether.

The importance of a welcome email

Filed under: Email — thatsoftwareguy @ 4:54 am

MediaPost discusses the importance of following up account creation with a welcome email. Takeaway:

  • Include your email and physical address for CAN-SPAM compliance
  • Provide a link to the website
  • Send the email right away – don’t wait 24 hours.
