CaRP – software to display RSS feeds on your web page

I’m a big fan of CaRP from GeckoTribe – I use it to display posts from this blog on That Software Guy’s Follow Me page. I just updated to the latest version – sweet!

Why Tweet?

Filed under: Social Networking — thatsoftwareguy @ 8:40 am

In the words of business blogger Dave Taylor,

My Twitter account is  http://Twitter.com/DaveTaylor  and if you look at my page, you’ll see I have over 700 people who pay attention to what I’m sending out. That means that when I write a blog post now, I promptly twitter about the new page and instantly see dozens to hundreds of thought and opinion leaders hop over to my blog and read it, add comments, and often blog about my postings on their own weblogs.

Let me say that again: when I publish blog entries, I update the hundreds of followers I have on Twitter and *instantly* see a spike in traffic.

Convinced yet?

Twitter 101

Filed under: Social Networking — thatsoftwareguy @ 5:47 am

I have recently started using Twitter, and I’m enjoying learning about leveraging as an idea-generating tool.

Question: if you Tweet for business, is it T-Commece? :)

Why you REALLY NEED to moderate reviews on your cart

Because if you don’t, you’ll get reviews like this one. Hat tip to software guy Andrew Duffy for finding this and discussing it in his insightful blog post, Amazon – a case study in abusive social networking.

Using Twitter with SMS on Sale

TwitterAlthough North American mobile plans generally come with an email to SMS gateway, mobile operators in many other countries do not offer this service as an integrated part of their offering, which makes it difficult to use my SMS on Sale contribution to Zen Cart. One solution is to use Twitter to generate the SMS message. Instructions on integrating the requisite Twitter API call into SMS on Sale are provided in the SMS on Sale help page.

Anti-Social Networking

Filed under: Social Networking — thatsoftwareguy @ 2:51 am

Well this was certainly hard to predict … not!

The only thing missing was an interview with Chuck Schumer.  Surely some overstuffed lawmaker will see this as an opportunity for windbaggery.

Dosh Dosh has done a great job of rounding up the top ones. Take a look, pick a couple, and follow them for a while.

Improving your LinkedIn Profile

Filed under: Social Networking — thatsoftwareguy @ 2:06 am

I blogged last week about how LinkedIn deleted That Software Guy‘s profile. Since then I’ve been busy rebuilding my profile, cajoling people to recommend me, etc. Rather than maintain two profiles (one for my day job and one for That Software Guy), I decided to just have one, which hopefully won’t be deleted – not that I’m bitter.

I thought this post from Guy Kawasaki had some interesting ideas about sprucing up your LinkedIn profile, some of which I’ve adopted. Let me know what you think of the end result – and make me a connection if you’d like! :)

LinkedIn deleted my profile!

Filed under: Social Networking — thatsoftwareguy @ 12:28 pm

For some reason, my That Software Guy profile on LinkedIn has been deleted. I emailed them asking “WTF?” but haven’t received anything more than a automatic response email so far. I sure would like to get those contacts and referrals back … :(

Shopping with a purpose

This article from Brandweek was interesting in its own right as a validation of the importance of Social Networking to e-Tailers – but what I found particularly interesting was this quote:

One of every three consumers said they would be more likely to buy a product or service if they knew that a certain amount of the purchase price was being donated directly to a cause or campaign.

Seems like a fairly straightforward feature to add to a shopping cart, but I haven’t seen it before. Maybe That Software Guy will add it to Zen Cart.
